Representation

This is baby 4th grade Sunoak during “Favorite Authors Day” in her classroom.

Baby Sunoak read voraciously & has distinct memories of wishing she was more “American”, aka white, so she could be the characters in her books.

Then she discovered The Baby-Sitters Club & the hands down coolest character was a Japanese American girl who, much like baby Sunoak, had no head for math & wanted to just draw & eat candy all day.

Representation matters. Children need to see people who look like them, grew up like them & see them for their worth & not as less or threatening b/c their skin is darker than white. Little girls are watching as a woman of Black & Indian descent stands on the nat’l stage as the Dem VP candidate. Children watched as a Black man was sworn in as our 44th President. Let’s all take a sec & relish the importance of those moments.

Children are also watching as our current President centers himself as the savior of the “real” America, aka not us. He refuses to admit his mistakes, says the lives lost during Covid were inevitable, & he won’t even wear a mask. He still calls Covid the “China Virus”. Representation matters. Is this deeply hateful & flawed man the one we want to continue representing “American Values”? Representing us?

This isn’t the ticket I wanted to see as the Dem ticket but I will be voting for them b/c our current POTUS does not deserve a second term. He has shown us over & over who he is. Challenges have come & he’s gone golfing.

My views are my own. I stand where I stand.
